Worldwide expertise

Global markets, regional legislation and local consumer preferences are all things we are profoundly familiar with, and it’s one of the reasons our flavours are so successful. We ensure that your products are a perfect match for consumer desires, while also complying with all market demands. Thanks to our expert legal department we are in a position to provide comprehensive legislation advice on a broad range of topics, whether it’s TPD, clean labelling or correct declarations.

Uncompromisingly good

High-quality flavours require carefully selected ingredients and processes. That’s why we use nothing but the very best raw materials and take a rigorously uncompromising approach to quality control and product safety so that we can offer you consistently high standards.

A family company with its sights set on the future

1931

Hamburg, harbour city, centre of commerce: in 1931, the merchants Alfred Hertz and Carl Selck founded what was to become one of the most famous tobacco flavouring companies in the world. Their portfolio included essential oils, fruit concentrates and dried fruit for the food industry.

1937

Hertz&Selck started experimenting with tobacco flavours, thus embarking on a course that would take them into a bright future. The company headquarters were in an urban commercial district in Glashüttenstraße – but only for 11 years: in 1948 the company relocated to the nearby Bellealliancestraße.

1957

The business remained in the family: Günther Hertz, cousin of founder Alfred Hertz, was a limited partner when Joachim Hertz, Alfred’s son, joined the company. During Germany’s economic miracle, he systematically expanded the tobacco flavouring division and the company’s fortunes were further buoyed by the great demand for “American Blend” cigarettes. Sales of tobacco flavours accounted for 20 per cent of the company’s business.

Founder Carl Selck retired and emigrated to America.

1966

After nine years in the company, Joachim Hertz was appointed managing director, a post he held until 1995. Tobacco flavourings now accounted for 90 per cent of sales.

1972–2005

Felix Schiffer was appointed limited partner and managing director until 2008, when he handed over to the next generation. Since 2001, Jan Hertz (right), son of Günther Hertz, has been limited partner and managing director; in 2005 Lutz Dörning (left) was appointed managing director.

2012

The last relocation – for the time being: Hertz&Selck’s headquarters and production facility opened up at the new location in Tarpenring 23 in the vicinity of the airport on a site large enough to accommodate future extensions.

2013

The company set up a dedicated beverage division.

2018

Work started on the new building for the extension of the production facilities at Tarpenring 23. Hertz&Selck has become one of the most successful medium-sized producers of premium flavours in the world.

2020

After 15 years at the helm, managing director Lutz Dörning retired. His successor is Nils Neugebauer (picture), who now manages the company with Jan Hertz.
